We believe that integrating several manual therapy techniques helps with quicker recovery.

Is It Safe?

Several of our therapists at My Physio are tremendously trained in the application of acupuncture needles. They understand the indications of when to use acupuncture, and use safe needling insertion techniques to help minimize pain. An initial ‘pinch’ may be felt upon insertion but should be relatively pain free after that

Your First Session

At My Physio, our team always uses single use, disposable, sterile stainless steel needles in order to prevent discomfort upon insertion. The needles vary in length, thickness and insertion depth depending on the area being addressed.

Acupuncture needles are inserted in a comfortable quiet therapy room, and upon administration you will be required to stay relatively still and relaxed. Depending on the treatment, needles will remain in place for about 10-20 minutes for optimal therapeutic benefit.

A majority of patients feel a significant improvement after one treatment. Acute conditions may require a few treatment sessions, where more chronic conditions may require 2 to 3 treatments per week over the course of several weeks to help relieve pain.

The main purpose of acupuncture is to help increase blood flow to injured or tight tissue, and thus help stimulate healing. Once an acupuncture needle penetrates the skin, there is an increase in blood flow to the local area caused by the release of three types of neuropeptides (Calcitonin Gene Related peptide (CGRP), nitric oxide, and substance P).

This increase in blood flow helps to promote the delivery of oxygen and other healing cells to the tissue to aid in recovery. Acupuncture needles also help release endorphins, which are the bodies’ natural painkillers. Medical Acupuncture can be used to loosen tight tissue, stimulate and facilitate weak muscles, and improve neural conduction. Several acupuncture points are closely related to trigger points, which are sites where nerves come in contact with muscles.

Acupuncture has a large influence on the nervous system because upon insertion, they stimulate nerve cells. This stimulation causes the nerve to transmit signals back to towards the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The Central nervous system responds with the release of endorphins. These endorphins act as natural painkillers and can tremendously relieve pain.
